Migraines in West Des Moines Iowa
According to The Migraine Trust, At least 90% of people who suffer from migraines began having their attacks prior to the age of 40. Most people have their first attack in their teens or 20s, and it is a much more rare occurrence for migraines to make their first appearance later on in life. Women suffering with migraines may notice patterns between their menstrual cycle and the occurrence of their migraines. Around 50% of women with migraines have reported a connection, which can be related to hormonal changes that take place during the monthly cycles.1
Menopause, Hormones and Migraines
It has been suggested that menopause may worsen migraines for up to 45% of women. In the time leading up to menopause, ovaries produce less estrogen, and additional changes in hormone levels can worsen either the severity or frequency of migraine attacks. While the exact cause of migraines is not fully understood, it is theorized that changes in the brain stem and its interaction with nerves in that area are a contributing factor.2
The brain stem is responsible for the control of many functions in our bodies that we consider automatic, such as our breathing and our digestion. Normal hormonal regulation can also be interrupted if brain stem function is compromised. The uppermost two bones in the neck responsible for protecting the brain stem may be the culprit in many migraine cases. Migraine expert Dr. Laurel Griffin focuses her chiropractic practice on specifically aligning these top two vertebrae to restore normal neurological function. Adjustments are given only when needed to ensure that the body is given the necessary time to heal. In a study of 100 migraine patients under upper cervical specific chiropractic care, natural relief was sometimes attained in as little as one adjustment.3
